University set to build new student center and international airport

In accordance with the University’s Master Plan, preliminary architectural designs have been unveiled for the new University Center to be built around Fayerweather gym. The plans call for new dining facilities, student common spaces, hangars, a control tower, and six gates.

Officially named the Suzanne Lemberg Usdan University Center and International Airport, the facility is being designed to meld the older architectural style of Fayerweather with modern, functional airport aesthetics.

“The joint pavilion and bus stop that was completed this year between the ’92 Theater and the Chapel was a big success,” said Dean of the College Peter Patton, who is a member of the Master Plan Executive Committee. “Sure, it hasn’t seen much bus traffic, but it looks like it could, and that underscores the new direction in which we are taking the University.”

The Executive Committee decided three years ago that Wesleyan should present a more accessible image to the public, an idea that now includes creating easy transportation to and around campus. Students living far from Middletown will now be able to fly directly into campus.

When construction on the new Center and International Airport is complete, Andrus field will be covered in tarmac and High Street will be widened to accommodate full sized jet traffic. Other aspects of the Master Plan include unifying campus tunnels into a consolidated subway network with stops at major buildings and residence halls.
