The men’s hockey team took the ice a little slower than usual this past weekend for their last two games of the regular season. Missing 10 of the 12 seniors on the roster [see front page], the Cards played mostly for their teammates. Defeating Conn. College 5-3, losing to Tufts in the final game 0-2, and ending the season with a 9-10-4 record overall (7-8-3 ECAC NESCAC/East Division), the hockey team saw an abrupt end to one of its best seasons in recent history.
In the match-up against Conn. College, the Cardinals’ frosh dominated the ice. Forwards Taylor Evans ’07 and John DelGuidice ’07 each had an unassisted goal and contributed assists to goals by teammates Jarred Gagnon ’07 and Chris Gateman ’05, respectively. Chris Graeceffa ’07 and Will Bennett ’07 also had assists. Bennett finishes the season as the top-scoring frosh in the NESCAC, with fifteen goals and eleven assists. Wes used opportunities and executed their combinations, scoring five goals out of a mere eighteen attempts as compared to the Camels’ three goals on fifty shots. Goalie Jim Panczykowski ’04, one of two seniors permitted to take the ice, ended a fantastic career at Wes playing 1,331 minutes of a possible 1,400 for the 2003-2004 season. With a 91.9 save percentage and a 2.93 goals-against average, Panczykowski became the first starting Wesleyan goalie to log a seasonal goals-against average under three. His career marks of 3.41 goals-against average and 91.0 save percentage are the best in team history.
