As a vegetarian freshman, I am wholly dissatisfied with the dining options (or should I say, lack there of?) on campus. As freshmen, we are forced to pay for a minimum of 10 meals per week, which can only be eaten at Mocon or Summerfields. Both of these fine establishments lack a variety of healthy options, especially for vegans and vegetarians.
Affecting all students is the closing of the Campus Center on weekends. Gone are the days when we could run over from Olin for a quick study break/meal. Now we are forced to trek all the way to Mocon or Summerfields, the “closest” places to grab a hot meal on campus.
The closing of the Vegan Café particularly harms vegans; on the weekends they are left with no choice but to go to Summerfields for a tofu scrambler (the only vegan option) after Mocon closes at 7:00. The Vegan Café serves some of the best quality food on campus and helps to attract vegan and vegetarian students to Wesleyan. So far, plans for the new campus center lack provisions for a new vegan café, and will continue to do so unless students speak out.
As changes are made to the Wesleyan campus, we should strive to move forward, not backwards. If students speak out against the cutback in dining hours and options, we just may be able to regain the ground we have lost.
