Ten student-athletes were named to the NESCAC 2003 Fall All-Academic team, proving that Cardinals are not only good at sports, but at hitting the books as well.
The Wesleyan honorees are: Brittany Allen ’04 and Courtney Quirin ’05 (women’s cross country); 2003 season NESCAC leading setter Katie Annand ’05 (women’s volleyball); punter/place kicker Vin Balsamo ’04 and offensive lineman Rob Weinstock ’06 (football); Leila Bozorg ’04 (women’s soccer); Megan Gauvey-Kern ’05 (field hockey); Tivon Sidorsky ’04, Co-Captain David Stone ’04 and Co-Captain Nick Vincent ’04 (men’s soccer).
For Allen, Annand, Stone and Vincent, this is their second time receiving the award. This is the third year for Balsamo.
The honor is based on three criteria. First, each athlete must be a starter or a key player for a varsity sport. The student must also have at least a 3.35 grade point average. Finally, each must have reached at least sophomore status at his or her specific institution.
“It’s really rewarding to know that working so hard in my classes and on the court pays off in the end,” Annand said.
Borzog agreed.
“It’s always nice to get recognition for putting time and effort into the things we do, so it’s certainly an honor,” she said. “Although, I’m not so sure that I deserve this any more than the rest of the athletes at Wes that bust their butts in the classroom and on the field.”
“I was very pleased to be selected to the team. I worked hard but had great fun in my classes and in playing football. I especially love the camaraderie of my classmates and my teammates,” Weinstock said.
