Seven University athletes earn All-Conference honors

Seven Cardinals athletes were awarded All-Conference honors this past weekend for their outstanding achievements in their respective sports during the fall 2003 season. Coaches in the NESCAC select the players.

Defenseman Nick Vincent ’04 from the men’s soccer team received first-team all honors.

“It’s always nice to be honored, but I think the award speaks more to the contributions of my teammates and coaches. If nothing else, I hope my teammates can take from this award some more confidence in their own abilities, because if I can receive an honor like this, just about everyone else on the team can as well,” said Vincent.

Despite having missed a portion of the season due to injuries, Vincent has been a strong presence on theteam as co-captain. This was a remarkable ending to a career in which he scored six goals, had four assists and was named second-team all NESCAC during the 2001 season. Joining Vincent are teammates Evan Berding ’05 and defenseman Javier Gaston-Greenberg ’05. Both Berding and Gaston-Greenberg made second-team.

Berding, who assisted the tying goal by Jared Ashe ’07 during the quarterfinal game against Amherst, has also had a great season. Adding to his 10 goals from the 2002 season, Berding netted three this season.

“I believe that the fact that three of our players made the two all conference teams is indicative of the high quality soccer we as players and coaching staff are producing. It was an exciting year and all though we fell short of our ultimate goal to win the NESCAC, we succeeded in converting the playing pitch into a dance floor where the eleven of us frolicked around amidst our opponents who moved to our hips and tango like foot movement,” Gaston-Greenberg said.

From the cross country teams, Courtney Quirin ’05, Bryan Bissell ’04, and Ellen Davis ’07 earned first-team honors and Owen Kiely ’06 earned second-team honors. Kiely, who has been one of the men’s top runners, helped the men’s team race to a seventh finish in the NESCAC Championship race and tenth in the New England Regional Division III Championship this past weekend. Kiely has been one of the leaders of the team all season. Leading the women’s cross country team for the third time during her Cardinals career, Quirin is heading to the NCAA Championship, qualifying her fourteenth place finish in the New England Regional Championship this past weekend.

Ashley Cecchinato ’05 and Caitlin Kelly ’07 from the women’s field hockey team both received second-team honors for their playing this season.

“It was quite an honor to be chosen as one of the 20 field players on the two all-conference teams out of all the teams in the NESCAC. Knowing the ability of some of our opponents and seeing my name on a list with theirs was quite an honor,” Cecchinato said. “I have to give credit to my entire team for helping me earn this honor. If it were not for them, I would not have improved or played like I did this season. I was amazed when I looked at the website and saw my name! It was amazing, and it is quite an honor to have earned this recognition.”

Gaston-Greenberg credited his team for much of the success he encountered this season.
