You may notice something a little different about the Ampersand’s look this week. That’s right! It’s Hawaiian themed! Ok, actually, it’s not. We just have a floral print going on. There have been many complaints recently about the appropriation of Hawaiian culture for party purposes. We’re not touching that one, but we would like to point out something interesting we learned about “Hawaiian” shirts. They were made by missionaries and Chinese merchants out of Japanese kimono cloth. Aloha shirts in their current form didn’t appear until the 1930s. God only knows what you’re consuming when you wear one of those, but it sure isn’t native Hawaiian culture.
As a side note, the Irish have been oppressed and occupied for centuries. Just remember: you lose any moral high ground on the Hawaiian party issue if we catch you in green with a Guiness in hand on St. Patrick’s day. Hope that doesn’t spoil your fun.
