The family of deceased student Terence Leary ’06 joined the Wesleyan community to celebrate his life at an ecumenical Memorial Service in the chapel today at 4 p.m. Leary, whose body was found below a Main Street bridge on the afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 4, was a resident of Butterfield C, a pitcher for the baseball team and a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity.
Prior to the service, at 3:45 p.m., students observed a moment of silence in honor of Leary, organized by the Wesleyan Student Assembly. The alma mater was played on the South College bells to mark the occasion, and the ceremony was followed by a reception at the President’s House.
On Saturday, over 50 members of the Wesleyan community traveled to Leary’s home of Rockville Center, N.Y. to attend a funeral Mass at St. Agnes Church.
In addition to providing bus transportation to Long Island for the Saturday Mass, the University bussed students to the Macken Funeral Home for calling hours on Thursday and Friday.
In an e-mail to the Wesleyan community, President Doug Bennet commented on the responses of Leary’s family and friends to his death.
“[Midge and I] have been moved by their love for him and by their deep sense of loss,” Bennet said. “We also have watched with admiration as they, together with deans, chaplains and others, struggled to turn this tragedy toward some shared purpose and strength. I hope you can join with us and continue in this spirit.”
