On Saturday, the men’s and women’s track teams opened the indoor season in the Wesleyan Invitational I. The teams recorded five first-place finishes between them, including four by the Cardinal women.

The Wesleyan women had a great day on the track, recording six top-three finishes in five events. Isabella Cucchi ’13 took first in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.62 seconds, while Kiran Sheffrin ’10 did the same in the 55-meter hurdles (9.37 seconds). The Cardinals also had a pair of first-place finishes in the distance events thanks to Lia Monti ’13 (1:44.33 in 600m) and Julia Frieze ’12 (2:33.24 in 800m). Helen DeKorne ’12 also took second in the 800m, clocking in at 2:35.78. The Cardinals’ 4×400 relay team of Monte, Beth Kenworthy ’10, DeKorne, and Frieze took first with a time of 4:14.01, and Wesleyan had a pair of top-three finishers in the weight throw in Ashley Swan ’13 (second, 32-7 1/2) and Lane Harris ’13 (third, 31-4 1/2).

The men’s 4×200 relay team of Dan Manuyag ’10, Jadeene Gabay ’10, Andre Lima ’13, and Jack Pacelle ’13 took first with a time of 1:37.27; the Cardinals also had the second-place team in Alex Iwamoto ’12, Max Ward ’13, James Dottin ’13, and Phabinly Gabriel ’13 (1:39.57). Also, Little Three javelin champion Mike Moody ’10 took second in the weight throw with a toss of 43-8 1/2, and Derek Groskreutz ’13 finished the 600-meter run in 1:28.40 for third.

The teams will return to action on Jan. 16 with the Wesleyan Invitational II.
