Amherst Associate Sports Information Director Justin Long finished as a national runner-up in the Coach/Administrator Profile portion of the 2009 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Fred S. Stabley Sr. Writing Contest. Long received the honor for his profile of Amherst volleyball and softball head coach Sue Everden, “A look inside the wonderful, whimsical mind of Sue Everden,” which first appeared in last year’s Amherst Football Illustrated magazine.

Bates volleyball improved to 9-4 with a 3-0 victory at St. Joseph’s (Maine) last Tuesday. The Bobcats suffered a pair of weekend losses to Tufts and Bowdoin and currently sit at 9-6 overall. Freshman Eliza Pyne led the team in blocks (0.78 per set) and attack percentage (.256) during the Bobcats’ 1-2 week; Pyne leads the team in blocking this season and ranks second in attack percentage.

Bowdoin women’s soccer has outscored its opponents 15-2 over its past five games, in which the Polar Bears have gone 4-1. The only blemish in that period is a 1-0 home loss to Colby, the first in program history. The Polar Bears rolled to a 4-0 win at Bridgewater State on Tuesday, equaling their third-highest scoring output of the season.

Colby men’s soccer earned its first conference victory of the season on Saturday as the Mules took down Tufts 3-2 in overtime. Freshman midfielder Nick Aubin had a pair of goals, including the golden goal in overtime, in the victory. The Mules currently sit one half-game ahead of Bates and Tufts for the eighth and final playoff spot with three conference games remaining.

Conn. College freshman volleyball setter Rachel Schroff was named NESCAC Player of the Week after averaging 3.0 kills and 1.0 blocks per set while hitting at a .487 rate during a 2-1 weekend. The Camels swept Middlebury 3-0 on Friday night for their fifth straight win before falling to Williams on Saturday. The Camels returned to the win column on Tuesday night with a 3-0 home win over Eastern Connecticut.

Hamilton senior wide receiver Max Foster caught a game-high eight passes for 96 yards in a 38-8 defeat at Trinity on Saturday. Senior linebacker John Lawrence was similarly credited with a game-high 11 tackles to complement his 11th career interception and a sack for a loss of nine yards.

Middlebury will send three men’s tennis players to the 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Tennis Championships, which will be held this weekend at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. Junior Andrew Peters took the singles title in the ITA Regional Championships, while seniors Andrew Thomson and Andrew Lee took the doubles title at the same event.

Trinity men’s soccer earned a 3-0 victory at previously unbeaten Williams on Sunday to move into a second-place tie with the Ephs. Junior midfielder Peter Marlette was named NESCAC Co-Player of the Week after a four-goal week that also featured Bantam victories over Westfield State (5-1) and Conn. College (2-1). Marlette had both Trinity goals against Conn. on Saturday and concluded the scoring in Sunday’s rout in the Purple Valley. The Bantams sit at 8-1-1 overall heading into Saturday’s contest at Tufts.

Tufts field hockey has outscored its last three opponents 24-1, including a pair of victories over NESCAC foes Colby (7-0) and Conn. College (8-1). The undefeated Jumbos, ranked third nationally in Division III, will take on fellow unbeaten Trinity on Saturday in a battle for first place. Junior forward Melissa Burke recorded her first career hat trick against Colby, and junior Tamara Brown had three goals and an assist in the same game to take over the all-time school scoring record with 98 career points.

Williams senior Edgar Kosgey was named NESCAC Men’s Cross Country Performer of the Week after finishing third overall at the New England Championship on Saturday. Kosgey was the highest NESCAC finisher, clocking in at 24:41. As a team, Williams finished eighth overall and first among the NESCAC schools in attendance with 320 points.
