Women’s Tennis Takes First in Grass Court Doubles Tourney
The women’s tennis team won eight of nine matches on Sunday in the Grass Court Doubles tournament in Newport, R.I., which were played not on grass, but on hard courts in the area due to heavy rain. The Cards accumulated 16 team points for a first-place finish out of seven teams. Stonehill College finished second with 12 points, while no other school scored more than six.
Wesleyan won all three matches in Flights B and C in the tournament while going 2-1 in Flight A. Meredith Holmes ’10 and Genevieve Aniello ’13 rolled over an Emmanuel duo in their first match, 8-0, then earned an 8-1 victory over a Roger Williams pair to reach the finals. Holmes and Aniello had a slightly more difficult go of things in the finals but pulled out an 8-5 win over a Stonehill team. Linda McDougal ’12 and Casey Simchik ’10 had a similarly easy match in Flight C. The Cardinal duo opened play with an 8-1 win over a pair of Stonehill opponents and followed it with a pair of 8-2 wins over doubles teams from Holy Cross and Salve Regina, the latter in the finals. In Flight A, Anika Fischer ’10 and Sarah Miller ’12 rolled to an 8-0 win over an Assumption twosome in their first match and an 8-2 victory over a duo from Holy Cross to reach the finals. This time, however, Stonehill got the better of Wesleyan, as Fischer and Miller fell 9-7 in the final match.
Wesleyan returns to dual-match action on Wednesday with a match at Mount Holyoke.

The golf team finished eighth in the two-day NESCAC Championship Qualifier over the weekend, which was held Saturday and Sunday at the par-71 Waubeeka Golf Links in Williamstown, Mass. Williams won the team title with a two-day total of 595, two strokes ahead of Hamilton. Trinity took third with a score of 603, and Middlebury was fourth with a 608 total. The top four teams in the qualifier advance to the spring NESCAC Championship, which will be held April 24-25, with the top finisher hosting.
Because of heavy rain, the start of the tournament on Saturday was delayed for an hour and 10 minutes, to 12:10 p.m. The final group, consisting of Trinity, Tufts, Wesleyan, and Williams, did not tee off until 2:30 and made it through only 16 holes before play was suspended due to darkness. Play resumed on the 17th hole at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
For the second straight year, Pete Taylor ’12 had a top-10 finish in the event, as he tied for seventh among 49 players with a seven-over-par 75-74-149 total. In 2008, Taylor was 10-over-par and finished 10th among 50 players. Next came captain Dan DeRienzo ’11, who tied for 25th with a 79-77-156. A.J. Ferraro ’12 finished right behind him, shooting an 81-76-157 to tie for 27th. Eli Kendall ’10 finished 46th with a 91-83-174, and Tom Salah ’12 placed 48th with an 86-91-177 total.
Wesleyan had the highest total on day one, 321, but the Cardinals’ score of 310 on the second day was the fourth-best in the event. Wesleyan finished three strokes behind Amherst and Colby and two ahead of ninth-place Bowdoin.
The Cardinals hit the links again this weekend in the Trinity Shootout, which will take place Saturday and Sunday.
