Field Hockey Falls to Third-Ranked Tufts
The field hockey team suffered a 3-1 home loss to Tufts, ranked third nationally, on Saturday, its fifth straight loss to the Jumbos. Ashley McLaren ’13 gave Wesleyan an early lead, but the Jumbos pulled away for the win despite 17 saves from Tori Redding ’13. Wesleyan fell to 1-3 on the year and 0-3 in NESCAC play, while Tufts, the defending NESCAC and NCAA runner-up, remained undefeated (5-0 overall, 3-0 NESCAC).
McLaren fired home a shot off a corner at 7:37 for her first career goal, but Tufts answered back six minutes later. The Jumbos shot a loose ball in front of the net past Redding at 13:06 to tie the score, and moved ahead 2-1 just over four minutes later. Tufts outshot Wesleyan 18-3 in the period but held just a one-goal lead at halftime thanks to Redding’s 13 first-half saves.
The Jumbos outshot Wesleyan 7-3 in the second half, but another four saves from Redding helped keep the Cardinals in the game. Tufts moved ahead 3-1 at 57:51, concluding the scoring in the contest. Wesleyan took six penalty corners to Tufts’ two in the half but was unable to capitalize.
Wesleyan is back in action with a Tuesday game at Wheaton, before a key weekend that includes games at Trinity and Middlebury. The last four games between Wesleyan and Wheaton have been decided by one goal, dating back to 2005, with the Lyons winning three of the four matchups.
