The women’s tennis team suffered a 7-2 defeat at Trinity on Tuesday in a match played indoors, extending its winless streak in Hartford to four matches. Wesleyan had defeated Trinity 5-4 in Middletown in 2008, a victory that clinched a spot in the NESCAC Championship for the Cardinals. Wesleyan is now 3-3 in the NESCAC standings and 10-6 overall.

The Cardinals found themselves in a 2-1 hole at the conclusion of doubles play, as Sarah Miller ’12 and Anika Fischer ’10 (No. 1) as well as Rachael Ghorbani ’09 and Casey Simchik ’10 (No. 2) suffered 8-3 defeats. At No. 3, Ania Preneta ’09 and Linda McDougal ’11 eked out a 9-8 victory.

Singles did not prove much kinder to the Cardinals, as Miller had the only Wesleyan victory on the afternoon. Miller took a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 3 to improve to 10-1 in the spring. At No. 2, Preneta fell 4-6, 6-2, 4-6 in Wesleyan’s only three-set loss of the afternoon. Trinity took three of the other four singles matches in straight sets, including No. 4 (Ghorbani, 6-0, 6-1), No. 5 (McDougal, 6-4, 6-0), and No. 6 (Meredith Holmes ’10, 6-3, 6-0). At No. 1, Fischer fell 8-4 in a match that was reduced to a single pro set.

Wesleyan concludes the regular season with a match at Bates on Sunday. The Cardinals will be looking to improve to 5-1 all-time against the Bobcats and secure a winning NESCAC record for the second straight season.
