The women’s tennis team improved to 10-5 on the season with an 8-1 home victory over Hamilton on Saturday, its fifth win in six all-time meetings. Wesleyan also improved to 3-2 in the NESCAC standings, and a win on Tuesday against Trinity will likely allow the team to clinch a playoff spot for the second straight season.
Wesleyan held a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play, as the No. 3 duo of Ania Preneta ’09 and Linda McDougal ’11 cruised to an 8-3 win, with Rachael Ghorbani ’09 and Casey Simchik ’10 recording an 8-5 win at No. 2. Sarah Miller ’12 and Meredith Holmes ’10 suffered an 8-4 loss at the top spot.
Wesleyan then swept all six singles matches, winning each in straight sets. Miller dominated her match at No. 2, winning 6-0, 6-0. Ghorbani (No. 3; 6-3, 6-2), McDougal (No. 4; 6-2, 6-3), Holmes (No. 5; 6-2, 6-2), and Simchik (No. 6; 6-3, 6-1) also cruised to victories. At No. 1, Preneta easily took her first set 6-2 and clawed her way to a 7-6 victory in the second.
With the win, Wesleyan is assured of its fourth straight winning season; the Cardinals have won exactly 11 matches each of the past three campaigns. Wins in the team’s final two matches, against Trinity and Bates, will give the Cardinals their highest win total since going 15-4 in the 2000-01 season.
