The Cardinal track teams dominated the unscored Elmer Swanson Invitational, which was held at Wesleyan on Saturday. The Wesleyan women racked up nine first- and second-place finishes, and the Cardinal men amassed 18.

The Cardinal women dominated the morning’s running events. Julia Frieze ’12 (400m, 1:02.85), Lilly Fesler ’11 (800m, 2:27.32), Jess Levin ’11 (1500m, 5:05.34), and Ravenna Neville ’10 (3000m, 10:22.03) all finished first in their respective events, while Kiran Sheffrin ’10 (200m, :28.20), Helen DeKorne ’12 (400m, 1:05.28) and Anna Schindler ’09 (3000m, 11:09.45) finished second. Wesleyan also had top-five finishers in the 800-meter run (Dessie Stefanova ’12, fourth), 1500-meter run (Amanda Jacob ’10, fourth), 3000-meter run (Tess Crain ’12, third; Sarah White ’11, fourth) and 100-meter hurdles (Sheffrin, third). The 1600-meter sprint medley relay team of Sheffrin, Kathryn Kulowski ’11, Frieze and Lisa Sussman ’09 also took first with a time of 4:21.96.

Wesleyan also had strong showings in the throwing and jumping events. Kulowski took third in the high jump and second in the triple jump, and Fesler took fifth in the long jump. Sukki Chham ’11 and Maryann Platt ’11 took third and fourth, respectively, in the shot put and discus, and Kora Shin ’10 took third in the javelin.

The Wesleyan men similarly dominated the running events, with a top-five finisher in the 100m (Alex Iwamoto ’12, fifth, :11.90), 200m (Kenton Atta-Krah ’09, fourth, :24.08), 400m (Jadeene Gabay ’10, second, :55.46), 1500m (Chris Foster ’09, first, 4:11.75; Henry Kaplan ’10, fifth, 4:31.73), 3000-meter steeple chase (James Lawrence ’12, first, 10:10.88) and 400-meter hurdles (Kyle Shin ’11, second, 1:03.80). Wesleyan also had the first-, second-, fourth-, and fifth-place finishers (Chris Coleman ’10, Brad Litchfield ’09, Seth Hafferkamp ’12 and Scott Cole ’09) in the 800m as well as all of the top five placers in the 3000m (Jonah Blumstein ’09, Charles Lang ’11, Justin Spring ’10, Brendan Sheehan ’11 and Sam Kurtis ’10). The Cardinals’ 4×100 relay team also took second.

Wesleyan also dominated the jumping events, as Tommie Lark ’11 finished first in the long jump and triple jump, and Iwamoto placed third in the long jump and second in the triple jump. Newman Hoffman ’09 had a strong day with a first-place finish in the shot put and second-place finishes in the hammer throw and discus, and Mike Moody ’10 placed second in the javelin and first in the hammer throw. Derek Kuwahara ’09 also took third in the javelin and first in the discus.

Next up for Wesleyan is the annual Little Three meet, which it will host on Saturday.
