The men’s and women’s crew teams continued their winning ways over the weekend on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachussetts in their first action of the spring. The men defeated Coast Guard for the fourth straight race, while the women defeated Mount Holyoke and Coast Guard while falling to Division I Holy Cross.

The men’s varsity heavyweight eight of Ross Heinemann ’09, Gael Hagan ’09, Charlie Weiss ’09, Elliott Skopin ’11, Terrence Word ’11, Gilder Keeler ’11, Parker Cook ’10, Ben Roberts ’09 and coxswain Jenny Moyer ’11 completed the 2,000-meter course in 6:08.3, 1.6 seconds ahead of Coast Guard (6:09.6). The second varsity heavyweight eight finished the course in 6:42.4, just under 12 seconds behind Coast Guard (6:30.9). Wesleyan’s third varsity heavyweight eight finished in 7:16.4, while the Coast Guard eight finished in 6:56.3.

The women’s varsity eight of Elaine Lauriat ’09, Claire Tradewell ’11, Catie Steidl ’11, Emilie Kimball ’11, Becca Schofield ’11, Heather McCarrick ’12, Sofia Warner ’09, Beth Ogata ’09 and coxswain Sami Pop ’11 completed the course in 6:58.4, well ahead of ninth-ranked Mount Holyoke (7:07.0) and seventh-ranked Coast Guard (7:11.6) but behind Holy Cross (6:54.0). (Wesleyan entered the race ranked 12th in Division III). Wesleyan’s second varsity eight finished in 7:40.4, behind Holy Cross (7:21.8), Mount Holyoke (7:32.0), and Coast Guard (7:39.1), and the Cardinals’ third varsity eight clocked in a 8:06.8, compared to 7:27.8 for Holy Cross and 7:58.4 for Mount Holyoke. Wesleyan’s novice eight finished in 8:22.7, behind Mount Holyoke (7:42.9), Holy Cross (7:59.9), and Coast Guard (8:11.4) but ahead of Mount Holyoke’s “B” boat (8:54.6).

The teams will race again this weekend in Worcester. Both teams will race Colby and Worcester Polytechnic Institute; the men will also take on UMass, while the women will race eighth-ranked Smith.
