Tommie Lark ’11 broke the indoor triple-jump record with a distance of 47-1 3/4 during Saturday’s Cardinal Invitational I, part of a series of strong showings by the Cardinal track teams. Lark had broken the team record in the Wesleyan Invitational II the previous week with a jump of 46-11 1/4. Sam Grover ’08 had set the previous record of 46-8 1/4 in 2008. Lark eclipsed the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships by over a foot with his second jump. Lark also captured the long jump in both the Wesleyan Invitational II and Cardinal Invitational I.
Wesleyan dominated the mile run during the Wesleyan Invitational II, placing four runners in the top five spots. Justin Spring ’10 won the event with a time of 4:33.21, finishing half a second ahead of Matt Katz ’11. Jonah Blumstein ’09 and Charles Lang ’11 finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to round out the scoring. Chris Foster ’09 extended the Cardinals’ success in the event, finishing second in the Cardinal Invitational I with a time of 4:26.98.
The Wesleyan women also dominated the running events, recording eight first-place finishes over the three events. Wesleyan took first in the 4x400m relay in the Wesleyan Invitational I and the Cardinal Invitational I, while the Cardinals took third in the event in the Wesleyan Invitational II. Julia Frieze ’12 took first in the 400m during the Wesleyan Invitational I, with Lilly Fesler ’11 (500m) and Lisa Sussman ’09 also recording first-place finishes.
Sussman repeated her first-place performance in the 800m during the Cardinal Invitational I and also recorded a top time in the 1000m in the Wesleyan Invitational II. Ravenna Neville ’10, in her first action of the season, clocked in at 18:21.78 in the 5000m for another first-place finish. Like the men, the Cardinal women also dominated the mile run; Jessica Levin ’11 and Amanda Jacob ’10 finished second and third, respectively, during the Wesleyan Invitational II, and Neville came in second during the Cardinal Invitational I.
Both teams return to action this weekend in the Tufts Invitational.
