Did You Know…?

Some notes from the hardwood this week:

·      Just ten days after a resounding 86-45 home victory over Williams that equaled the largest margin of victory ever in the now 70-game series, Wes women’s basketball suffered a 75-68 loss in Williamstown last Friday. Astute followers likely recall that the Cardinals fell to Williams 73-68 in the first meeting between the two teams in 2007-08, only to defeat the Ephs by 18 and 19 in two home games later in the season. These struggles are not a recent phenomenon: since the 1999-2000 season, the Cardinals are 3-8 in Chandler Gymnasium but 8-2 in home games against the Ephs. Wesleyan has not won in Williamstown since Nov. 1, 2001—a 52-41 victory that made it three in a row in Chandler (and four straight overall) over the Ephs.

·      The Wes men opened their NESCAC slate with a 76-46 loss at Amherst—a result markedly different from the thrilling 72-69 home win over the Lord Jeffs the previous week. The Cardinals, however, rebounded to thrash Trinity 68-52 the next day. The last NESCAC team to lose a conference game by 30 and win its next NESCAC game by double digits was Tufts, which fell to Amherst 94-61 on Feb. 12, 2005 but defeated Colby 99-88 in a home NESCAC Championship quarterfinal game on Feb. 19. (Tufts also won in Waterville 78-57 to open its 2005-06 conference slate). Wesleyan is the eighth NESCAC team overall to lose to a conference foe by 30 and win its next NESCAC game, but is the only one to win its next game by double digits on the road:

·      Finally, the Cards’ win over Trinity was Wesleyan’s second ever against a defending NESCAC champion. The first came in 2004-05 against then back-to-back NESCAC champ Williams, which the Cards took down 72-71 on Jan. 14, 2005 in the Ephs’ first visit to Silloway Gymnasium—where they have not lost since.
