In response to criticism about the Argus changing the titles of Wespeaks, I want to clarify our policy on this matter. We reserve the right to alter titles of submissions. As Trent Grassian ’09 wrote, one factor that would lead us to change a title is its length. The original title that Trent submitted through our website, “The Argus Loves ’Bending’ the Facts,” was a bit long for the space allotted for hir Wespeak. However, there are many other reasons for title changes. We sometimes change a title so that it better reflects the thesis of the submission. If a title is too general, we will make it more specific. Titles also must follow the Argus’ style rules.

We do not change titles of submissions, including Wespeaks, to avoid portraying the Argus in a negative light. In fact, two of the seven Wespeaks that Trent has submitted in the past four years were published with titles that directly criticize the Argus (“Dear Argus, why do you hate trans folk so much?” November 13, 2007, Volume CXLIII, Number 19; and “The Argus prints fucked-up ’jokes,’” April 6, 2007, Volume CXLII, Number 37). If you have any further questions, please e-mail us at argus@wesleyan.edu.
