After reading Dr. Davis Smith’s Wespeak (“STI Testing at Health Center,” Jan. 30, 2009, Volume CXLV, Number 1) and Zak’s (“Univ. STD Testing Should be FREE,” Dec. 5, 2008, Volume CXLIV, Number 23) concerning free STI testing on campus, I thought I would take this opportunity to advertise two ways to get tested for free through ASHA (AIDS and Sexual Health Awareness).
The Oasis Center has agreed to provide year-round, free, anonymous and confidential HIV testing for all of Wesleyan. Call (860) 347-6971 x3908 to make an appointment. They cannot take walk-ins. All visits are confidential, anonymous, and take 20 minutes. They use the rapid HIV test, which gives you results while you wait.
On April 9, there will be a free STI testing event during the day. Connecticut will provide two HIV testers and a battery of others to test for bacterial STIs. Time and location TBA.
If you are at risk or believe you have an STI, do not wait two months. This can cost you a lot more money in the long run.
ASHA (AIDS and Sexual Health Awareness) has worked extremely hard to bring free STI testing to campus and dispel myths and stigmas surrounding STIs. Please e-mail asha.wesleyan@gmail.com for more information or to get involved.
Finally, we want to point out that the appropriate term is now STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) instead of STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease). Political correctness aside, STI is a more accurate term.
