Women’s soccer shuts out Colby in away game; record improves to 5-1-1, best since 1997 season

Women’s soccer team excelled again on Saturday, beating Colby 1-0 to improve its record to 5-1-1. It was a dominating performance all around, as the Cardinals’ offense pummeled Colby’s keeper with six shots on goal, and the defense held the White Mules to only one.

Elena Bertocci ’09’s performance, however, made all the difference. She converted a clever give-and-go with Dasha Battelle ’11 in the 39th minute, sidestepping the charging Mule goalie to provide the game’s only goal. The Cardinals pressured Colby’s Loni Pisani all game, with Yuri Hoshino ’09 bringing the heat with two shots on goal.

The 5-1-1 Cardinals have already posted the most wins in a season since the 1997 campaign. In addition, their four shutouts tie the mark for the most ever for Wes through seven games, equaling the feat of the 1993 team. The defensive statistics go even farther: the team goals against average is only 0.69, and the three goalies have combined to save .865 of shots on goal.

With such an impressive record so far this season, the women’s soccer team can expect to ranked in New England and nationally in Division III later this week.

Wesleyan will look to continue its breakthrough season this Wednesday, October 8th, when they face Rhode Island College in Providence.
