A decision on gender-neutral housing may still be months away, according to those close to the proceedings.
The issue was brought up at the Dec. 8 meeting between President Doug Bennet and students, who listed gender-neutral housing as one of a list of student concerns and problems with the Wesleyan Administration.
For now ResLife is still waiting for a decision by the Administration and the Student Life Committee on the issue, according to Rich DeCapua, Assistant Director of Residential Life. He added that the decision will not affect the housing lottery in the spring, since sophomores, juniors and seniors can house with anyone.
The gender-neutral housing decision will carry greater repercussions for incoming freshmen, however, who can make housing decisions as early as May, according to DeCapua.
The WSA, along with several other campus organizations, has issued statements in support of the gender-neutral housing. A WSA-administered poll on Oct. 21 showed overwhelming support for the policy; with a surprisingly high turnoutfor a WSA poll (1,170 students voting), 92 percent voted in support of the implementation of the gender-neutral housing policy. About 6 percent voted against the policy; while the rest of voters abstained or wrote in a response.
