Sports shorts: 2-1 NESCAC weekend for men’s squash

The men’s squash team dropped a disappointing 1-8 decision to Tufts University in their first match of the NESCAC championship this weekend, but rebounded to win consolation matches against Colby College and Connecticut College, both 6-3.

The Cards entered the weekend with an even 6-6 record, coming off three straight wins to close out their last weekend of play. Unfortunately, the Tufts squad gave up only five games over the course of the 27-game match, three of them coming from Matt Candal’s ’11 win.

The matches against Colby and Conn. College were only decided in the last two or three games, respectively. Hanging on to a 4-3 match lead against Colby with two games to go, Nate Fowles ’10 and Tyler Snell ’09 swept their games 3-0 to clinch a close win.

Likewise, even though the Cards jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Conn. College, they dropped their next three games to equalize at 3-3. In familiar fashion, the 7-9 slot players went a combined 9-1 over the last three games to bring the match total to a victorious 6-3.

With wins against Colby and Conn. College, the team brings its home winning streak to five matches. They’ll face MIT at home this Thursday, Feb. 7 at 4:30 p.m., with a chance to extend the run. They then head away to Amherst College for the Little Three Tournament, where they’ll take on perennial rivals Amherst and Williams College.
