The men’s and women’s track teams had solid finishes in the New England Division III Championships this weekend. The women’s team came in 18th, a full seven places higher than last year’s finish. The men’s team also bested its showing from last year, jumping from 21st place in 2006 to 14th place.
On the men’s side, Sam Grover ’08 continued his winning streak, coming in first in the triple jump. Not only is Grover the New England triple jump champion, but he ended his season by setting a new team record.
“It was great to finally go out there and just have everything come together and work well for me,” Grover said. “I’ve known that I’ve been capable of jumping that kind of a distance. It’s been frustrating in other meets when I couldn’t do that for whatever reason. I feel grateful to be injury-free at this point since they have plagued my teammates. I feel very fortunate, and hopefully I’ll be able to do it again at Nationals.”
Mike Moody ’10 finished fourth in the Javelin toss. Unfortunately, he incurred an injury in the process and will not be able to compete at Nationals.
For the women, Steph O’Brien ’08 had another solid day, finishing second in the 800-meter steeplechase.
“We went into New Englands with everything we had and did as best we could considering the size of our team,” said Kiran Sheffrin ’10. “We really supported each other though. There were people cheering for every field and track event, and we may not have won the meet, but we all were there for each other. We really did do a good job of supporting each other even though the weather wasn’t ideal.”
