The Cards continued their less-than-stellar baseball season this weekend, losing two of three games to drop to 11-16 (3-6 NESCAC).
Wesleyan traveled to Bowdoin on Saturday expecting a tough matchup against a solid Polar Bear squad. In the opening game of the doubleheader, Bowdoin sealed a victory in the fifth inning, when a grand slam gave the Polar Bears a 6-2 lead. Despite pushing a run across in the top of the sixth, the Cards struggled to maintain momentum at the plate. The Cards added two runs in the eighth, but Bowdoin reliever Tyler Turgeon settled down and pitched a perfect ninth to close out the game. Drew Dominguez ’09 provided one of the few bright spots for the Cards with two hits and two RBIs. Chris Graceffa ’07 and Rob Coughlin ’07 also had two-hit games.
Despite an 8-5 loss in the first game, the Cards came back strong in the second game of the doubleheader. Dominguez hit well once again, catalyzing a surge of offense from the Cards. Dominguez combined with Chris Arvanites ’08 for five hits, three runs, and five RBIs. This offensive output was enough support for starting pitcher Kit Tholen ’08, who went five and a third innings, giving up three runs on three hits and striking out three.
The Cards put the game out of reach in their half of the ninth, scoring two unearned runs on a throwing error by Bowdoin catcher Reid Auger en route to an 8-6 victory.
After the gritty doubleheader with Bowdoin, the Cards turned around and headed to Springfield College for a Sunday afternoon game. Dominguez extended his hitting streak to four games, going 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. In addition, five Cardinals came through with multiple-hit games, including Alex Mautone ’07 and Brice Kelly ’10, who combined for four RBIs. Kelly is hitting well in this his freshman season. His eight doubles are good for a three-way tie for fourth in the NESCAC.
Despite solid hitting across the board for the Cards, Springfield won the game 6-5 in the ninth on an unearned run that scored on an infield hit.
Wesleyan will host Eastern Connecticut on Andrus Field tomorrow.
