Mike Moody ’10
Men’s Track and Field
In just his first year, Mike Moody ’10 has established himself as the best javelin thrower in Wesleyan history. In the team’s first outdoor match of the season at the Trinity Invitational on March 31, not only did Moody finish first in the event, but also broke the 10-year Wesleyan record by over 11 feet with a throw of 185’9”. In the next outdoor event, Moody paced the Cardinals to a fourth place finish out of seven teams at the Coast Guard Invitational. His throw of 186’9.75“ broke the record he set a week ago. At the Elmer Swanson Invitational on Saturday, Moody once again broke his own record with a strong throw of 187’11”, beating his throw from the opening Trinity Invitational by more than two feet. Moody and the track team will take on Williams and Amherst in the Little Three tournament this weekend.
Erin McCarthy ’10
Women’s Lacrosse
After receiving little playing time coming off the bench at the beginning of the season, Erin McCarthy ’10 has emerged as a key starter for the women’s lacrosse team. In the past three games, McCarthy has gone on an offensive tear as she ripped home seven goals, three of them in the team’s 10-8 loss at Trinity on Wednesday. In her second start of the season, against the Bantams, McCarthy opened up the game’s scoring with an unassisted goal, giving the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. McCarthy almost single-handedly led a Cardinal comeback late in the game, as she scored two goals in a five-minute span to pull the Cardinals within 10-8 with 1:38 left in regulation. The Ridgefield, Conn. native also notched a hat trick in the Cardinals’ 12-7 victory on Saturday over Colby. McCarthy and the Cardinals, ranked fifth in the NESCAC, host first-place Middlebury College on Saturday.
Meaghan Dendy ’10
Softball
The softball team is enjoying a turnaround year, in large part due to the standout play of Meaghan Dendy ’10. Dendy has established herself as one of the top leadoff hitters in the conference, quite an achievement for a first-year player. The Swansea, Mass. native is currently tied for the team lead with 33 hits, and second on the team with a .384 batting average. Displaying an uncanny ability to get on base, Dendy also leads the Cardinals with 23 runs scored. Dendy’s production is not just limited to her abilities at the plate, however. Recently named the NESCAC pitcher of the week, Dendy sports a 6-3 record on the mound with a 2.81 ERA, including two complete game victories in her last two outings. Against Hamilton on April 14, Dendy allowed just one earned run in seven innings, while limiting Elms College to a single run in five innings on April 10. Dendy and the softball team, first place in the NESCAC West division, take on Bates and Bowdoin this weekend in key conference match-ups.
Casey Simchick ’10
Women’s Tennis
Beginning with her first match, a 6-2, 6-1 win at Bates in October 2006, Casey Simchik ’10 has been an almost unstoppable force for the women’s tennis team. Simchik rolled to a 7-0 start to begin her career, losing only one set in the process: a narrow, 5-7 defeat against Michigan Tech. Simchik competes primarily in the number six singles position, though she has moved to the number five spot twice and competed in the number four position once; she won all three of these matches. Simchik’s overall .727 winning percentage is second highest on the team, trailing only undefeated Lizzie Collector ’09. She has dropped only six sets all year, four of which came in 9-0 Wesleyan defeats. Although Simchik has lost three of her past four matches against the NESCAC’s top competition, her overall record still sits at 8-3. As Wesleyan has two matches remaining, Simchik still has a very good chance to finish her freshman year with ten wins, a feat that would solidify her status as a force to be reckoned with in the coming years.
Jon Killeen ’10
Men’s Lacrosse
Right out of the gates, Jon Killeen ’10 has made an impact on what represents an extremely deep and talented Wesleyan squad, currently ranked fourth in Division III. Killeen is third on the team in points with 26, including 10 assists and 16 goals on 32 shots. Twenty-two of his 32 shots have been on goal for an impressive .688 shot-on-goal percentage. Killeen has proven himself to fit right in to an impressive Cardinal offense stacked with talented young attack-men, including Grayson Connors ’08, Jason Ben-Eliyahu ’09, and Russel Follansbee ’09.
