Dear Wes,
I am genuinely happy about the coming leadership change at Wes! In our hearts we all know that Doug was a good president. He always did the right thing, while giving all stakeholders their due. He never caved to the self-interested factions and was instrumental in raising much needed capital for the university. I applaud him for having the courage to step down and let another person take the reigns of our wonderful institution.
I think we were all shocked that the committee didn’t pick a minority candidate. I’ve been saying for years that the next president would be another crusading Freddye Hill type, and that as a result alums would become even more alienated than they are now. I think we can all thank God (or whatever it is that Wesleyanites worship) that didn’t happen, and I was happy to be proven wrong (I hope this is the case). I am proud of Wesleyan for looking beyond race and gender in this matter and judging the candidate on his merits and nothing else. We do not need another Maria Cruz-Saco affair.
Wesleyan should be proud of its scholarship, teaching and student achievement. None of this should ever be compromised to meet a social engineering objective.
Michael, I wish you luck! It’s going to be a wild ride.
Regards,
Luke Hornblower
