Holocaust Memorial Day

April 15 will be Yom Hashoah, or Holocaust Memorial Day. As some of you may remember, last year, students and faculty here at Wesleyan participated in a 24-hour reading of names of Holocaust victims—a custom that has been adopted worldwide in order to personalize the tragedy. This is an attempt to recognize each victim as an individual, and though we don’t know detailed information about each person’s life, we can try at least to remember their names.

This year, we hope to do a 24-hour name reading outside of Olin Library on Yom Hashoah, starting Sunday, the 15 of April, from 12:00 a.m. Sunday to 12:00 a.m. Monday. To make this event work, we will need help from all of you. If you would like to volunteer to read names, please e-mail mjweiss@wes with one or more half-hour time slots during which you would be willing to read. We would like there to be two people per slot, so feel free to sign up with a friend.

If you have a name of a Holocaust victim that you would like read, also feel free to include any information that you know about them. We hope to be able to continue this Wesleyan tradition, and with your help, we will be one step closer to doing so.
