In its final game before the NESCAC playoffs this weekend, the women’s basketball team took down non-conference opponent Westfield State College 66-48 on Tuesday in Westfield, MA. The victory pushed the Cards’ overall record to 15-8, while Westfield State dropped to 8-15.
The Cards jumped out to a 15-2 lead after just six minutes of play and never looked back. The lead stretched to as many as 20 points and never dropped below nine. Lucy Sprung ’08 led all scorers with 14 points, 10 coming in the first half. Ali Fourney ’09 and Stephanie Savas ’08 both added nine points, while Nikki Maletta ’08 chipped in eight. The Cards shot 44 percent from the field for the game, shooting a blistering 53.8 percent in the first half.
The game allowed the starters to get a run in before this weekend’s playoff opener and also provided some of the younger players some playing time. Freshmen Emilie Knight ’10, Kaitlin Halibozek ’10, and Kiah McAndrew-Davis ’10 all saw more then 10 minutes on the floor. Knight took advantage of the opportunity and picked up six points and five rebounds.
The Cards head to Williamstown on Saturday for a first-round NESCAC tournament match-up with Williams. The game gives the team a chance to avenge to previous losses to the Ephs.
“All of us are really looking forward to the upcoming game, especially because it’s Williams. They beat us twice in the regular season, so we really have a lot to prove to them. If we just play our game both halves, there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that we can beat them,” Fourney said.
