There are a lot of movies I’m excited to see in the Film Series this quarter, as there are every quarter, but I think Luke Spears had a point (in his Wespeak from Tuesday) that the current lineup is a little heavy with better-known movies that have been playing in wide release. My problem isn’t with the movies themselves being in the series, but that their being there means that other recent films aren’t. Every year there are great movies released that get less recognition than they deserve and that can be really hard to see if you don’t live in New York. The Film Series has been reliable in the past in bringing these kinds of films to Wesleyan, and is again this quarter with “The Fountain” and “Old Joy.” But I was hoping to see, instead of “Dreamgirls” or “Casino Royale,” another of the many movies released last year to critical acclaim but little attention otherwise. Coming to mind most prominently are documentaries like “49 Up” and “51 Birch St.,” the foreign films “Three Times” and “The Death of Mr. Lazarescu,” and recent offerings from great directors, like Richard Linklater’s “A Scanner Darkly” or David Lynch’s “Inland Empire.” These are movies I really want to see on a big screen!! But can’t, unless they play on one I can get to, and if I want to see “Dreamgirls” again I’ll walk to Destinta. That said, I think the Film Series is one of the things that makes Wesleyan great and that we should all make conscious efforts to support it.
