Women’s tennis avenges loss to GW

The Cardinal tennis team picked up its first win of the second semester this weekend during the Smith/Mount Holyoke Invitational, defeating George Washington 6-3 and avenging their December loss to the Colonials.

The team opened the tournament with two 9-0 losses to Franklin & Marshall and Middlebury on Saturday with each player suffering two 3-0 losses.

“These girls hit very hard,” said Caroline Janin ’08. “On our team, we only have one player that is truly a ‘hard-hitter,’ Andrea Giuliano, and she plays number four, so I don’t often hit with her. This resulted in my not being able to return the serve a great majority of the time because I am so unaccustomed to receiving hard serves… I did, however, through the first match [Franklin & Marshall] improve my serve returns by volleying them.”

The Cardinals bounced back Sunday. The team defeated George Washington University 6-3, led by number one Casey Simchik ’10. Simchik won her match against George Washington 3-2. Liz Demakos ’09 was also victorious in her match against the Colonials, 3-2. Andrea Giuliano ’09, Margaux Weisman ’09, and Katie Kalafus ’09 were also key in the team victory, each winning their matches 3-0. Janin completed the Cardinal victories with a 3-0 win by default.

Simchik later defeated her Tufts opponent 3-1, while Janin won by default. Elizabeth Larner ’10 also had a 3-2 victory in what was ultimately a 6-3 Cardinal loss.

This upcoming weekend, the Cardinals will play in the NESCAC Championships, followed by a match next Tuesday at Smith.
