Hopes to improve on last year’s tie with Holy Cross turned into a disappointing loss for the women’s hockey team Tuesday evening at the Spurrier-Snyder rink. Two well-executed goals, the first by Julia Kazmers ’08 and the second by Adrienne Shea ’08, were not enough to combat increasingly faulty play, and the Cardinals ended with a harsh 6-2 loss.
Wesleyan managed to follow Holy Cross closely through the first period. Less than two minutes after Holy Cross got on the board, Kazmers picked up a loose puck and responded with a goal for Wesleyan. Her unassisted goal came at 5:01, and both teams played close defense to send the game into the second period as a 1-1 tie.
Holy Cross came out strong in the second period, scoring two goals by the halfway mark. Shea responded at 14:11 to bring the Cardinals within a goal. Shea took a shot off an assist from Antoinette Zosherafatain ’10, missing an opening in a net and then promptly scored off her own rebound.
Coming out of mediocre first and second periods, the Cardinals had a good chance of pulling off a tie, or possibly a win. Unfortunately, the discipline was not there.
“We weren’t playing the way we wanted to from the beginning,” said Coach Donna Wright. “And after the second and third goals, thing really went downhill.”
In the third period Holy Cross continued to demonstrate its ability to pull ahead early, scoring twice more in the first five minutes of the frame. After the second set of back-to-back scores by Holy Cross, Wesleyan chose to replace goalie Rachel Stemerman ’09 with Hilary Schreiber ’09. The goal change was not successful in warding off another Holy Cross tally, with the visitors scoring their sixth and final goal at 13:28.
Wright attributes the loss to “a major mental lapse.”
“Obviously, we did appear to be game ready,” she said. “And it was very disappointing to go from this weekend, where we were playing better and better.”
The Cardinals conclude their semester with a home contest against MIT, a three-year-old hockey program and a team they have not yet played. The puck will drop at 3 p.m. this Saturday.
