Dear Jose Chapa,
I was appalled by your Wespeaks in the October 10th and October 27th issues of the Argus. In fact, I was shocked that the Argus would even print blatantly racist and prejudiced remarks made by a Wesleyan student. Racist remarks can be directed at Black, Hispanic, Asian, and even White people. Being a minority, as a Mexican student, gives you no more right to be racist. Prejudice in your articles was directed at white students, athletes, and students from wealthy backgrounds (both white and students of color). For you to openly say, “I don’t know, I do think (fuck you) that the hatred gene only applies to white jock students. I mean, I certainly do not know anyone else that is not white (fuck you) that is fucking people over” is absolutely absurd. Certainly, if a white student used such prejudiced language against a Hispanic student, not only would it not be printed, it would be followed by disciplinary action. As a white student, and an athlete, I personally felt attacked by your articles, even though I had nothing to do with your laptop being stolen (I’ve had mine stolen too, and I bought a new one, with MY money, not my parents’).
Every week, we are e-mailed about acts of intolerance that have occurred, including racist and homophobic graffiti. These acts of intolerance are not things we should tolerate on this campus. Your Wespeaks are an equally important issue. Dean Cruz-Saco has been notified. A racism double-standard should not exist. It is not okay for you to use racist remarks, just as it is not okay for me to use them. Hopefully this has shed some light on issues about which you seem ignorant. Thank you.
Sincerely,
David Scardella
