Wes Fuhrman is captain of the men’s cross-country team and a member of the Class of 2005. He earned All-New England honors in cross-country and All-NESCAC honors in track during his sophomore year. Last spring, Fuhrman became the ECAC champion at the outdoor 5K. This fall, he is leading the Cardinals’ runners in what looks like one of their best seasons ever.
MD: What was your best cross-country moment here at Wesleyan?
WF: I’ve had some personal success, but the team still has a lot to accomplish, so I’m still waiting for that moment. We’ve been growing year to year, expecting to improve, but the best is yet to come.
MD: Did you have any bad cross-country experiences?
WF: Missing all of last year was the worst. I hurt my knee at the end of the summer, and didn’t know if I would recover. Watching [the rest of the team] go through the season, and not being able to run with them was pretty awful.
MD: How did you work to get back from the injury?
WF: While I was still injured, I did a lot of biking. I sweat up a storm on the stationary bikes in the weight room, and after my surgery I ran as soon as I could, and I built up my mileage. I wanted to compete as soon as I could, so I would say that I had a lot of “rocket sauce” saved from the time I missed, and it was just waiting to jump out.
MD: How did you feel when you were finally able to race again?
WF: I was pumped up once I was able to race last spring, despite the lack of training. Missing that much time made me realize how much a part of my life running was, and when I came back I felt like I could run forever. I wanted to run as many miles as I could each day.
MD: What do you like to do in your spare time?
WF: I like to spend a lot of time pursuing women on the Internet. I also eat one-pound burgers as often as possible, do my regular dishwashing duties at 82 Lawn, and kick stray cats off of the porch.
MD: You mentioned women on the Internet. How are things with the ladies?
WF: I’m juggling somewhere from four to six Internet girlfriends at the moment. They all treat me pretty well. Every now and then they send me winking emoticons, and that’s when I know things are really going well. So, I’d say things are going well to quite well.
MD: What were some of your best non-athletic moments here at Wesleyan?
WF: Getting the number one pick in the housing lottery was pretty sweet. Riding tandem bikes and dining nightly at MoCon have been great as well.
MD: Is there anything else you want people to know about you?
WF: I was sporting a mean mustache for a few weeks. It was a sad moment when I removed it. It’s something that I like to sport every now and then, and it’s an inspirational device in the spirit of the legendary American distance runner, Steve Prefontaine, who hails from Oregon like myself. I apologize to the mustache fans, which constitute over 90 percent of the women on campus and certain guys, but I had to remove it after it helped me run one of my best races.
