On Tuesday, Oct. 10, the men’s and women’s tennis teams will heighten awareness, foster education, and raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at the women’s tennis match at Connecticut College. The men’s and women’s tennis teams have dedicated their fall seasons to the promotion of breast cancer awareness and look to culminate their efforts at the tennis courts on Tuesday from 2:00 until 6:30 pm. In addition, the tennis teams will be again promoting breast cancer awareness and raising funds for the cause at the Wesleyan homecoming football game Oct. 21.
Since the beginning of the semester, the teams have been closely working with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, which has been striving for over 20 years to combat breast cancer as a life-threatening disease “by funding research grants and supporting education, screening and treatment projects in communities around the world,” according to its website. The Connecticut chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Federation will have an information booth at Tuesday’s tennis match, where educational materials on breast cancer and the importance of early detection and screening will be distributed.
Tuesday’s special events before the women’s tennis match include a free tennis clinic at 2 p.m., free Cardio Tennis at 2:30 p.m., onsite racket stringing, raffles, a silent auction, and other prizes. Items that will be raffled and auctioned off include a $300 Prince tennis racquet, a Nike warm-up jacket, a Wilson tennis bag, athletic clothes, pink Penn tennis balls, an hour tennis lesson with the head coach Ken Alrutz of the men’s and women’s tennis teams, gift certificates from surrounding restaurants, and many other items.
The tennis teams will also be stationed at the Homecoming football game on Oct. 21 where they will again be raffling and auctioning terrific items, and accepting donations for the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
“My players and I have been gratified by the positive responses we have received from our opponents this fall,” Alrutz said. “We look forward to seeing many members of the Wesleyan community next Tuesday and during Homecoming.”
“The men’s and women’s tennis team have been working hard to prepare for Tuesday’s activities, and we’ve been thrilled to do what we can in order to promote such a worthy cause,” added senior tri-captain Vijay Chaudhuri ’07. “Our hope is that we get a large turnout both on Tuesday and at Homecoming. We’ve got a lot of great activities which will hopefully raise a large amount of money and raise awareness for breast cancer.”
If someone you know has passed because of breast cancer or has survived the disease, and you would like one of the players to honor her or him at the match, please contact Alrutz (kalrutz@wesleyan.edu).
