Protest respectfully

I was not even fully aware of the immigration problems until I began researching this issue for a Psych paper last week. In response to the human chain surrounding the Campus Center on May 1, I did not even get a chance to look at the signs or to listen to what the protesters were saying; I think some of it was in a foreign language. I think it is great that Wesleyan students can join together to promote their cause.

However, the fact that I had to encounter a physical barrier to perform a routine action of getting and sending my mail was discomforting. I collect the leaflets and I read them when I have a chance but I don’t want to feel blocked from entering a public building. I said “excuse me” to several protesters and two would not budge, and I almost hit my head on the stair railing to get around the chain.

I wish the best of luck for this cause and for many others, but I was not happy that I was almost hurt this time around.
