Like numerous other students, I was very excited that the Books were coming to Wesleyan on the 3rd. I got to Eclectic just after the opening band finished playing, and soon realized that the show was not going to be everything I imagined it would/could/(and most importantly) should be. The problems began when the band started to play; there was a throng of people pushing to get as close as possible. From my vantage point (standing on a chair against a wall), it was all just so amusing and frustrating. Two-thirds of the room was empty, the rest was packed tight and, as a consequence, only the people in the front of this crowd were able to see both the musicians and the screen. Everyone needs to relax; you don’t have to make it impossible for anyone to view the show with some personal space (and a view). Although this “crowding-together” was annoying, it can be forgiven: this was a concert and most of the people at this school suck. But what really makes me vomit all over myself while thinking of the show was the amount of chatter, between and during songs. This is a band that doesn’t play loudly and requires attention in order to enjoy the show, so shut the fuck up. It seemed as if over half the people were there just to schmooze it up, C’MON. Respect the people who are there to enjoy the music. Some of you might be saying, “What about respecting the people who decide to talk during a show?” I have no reason/motive to do so. It’s not only disrespectful to the rest of the audience to be consistently talking, it’s also a slap in the face to the performer. When a performer tells an audience to be quiet (and this happened) then there is something blatantly wrong with the audience. Shit like that should never happen. Let’s all just be adults and not toddlers who have no respect for others’ enjoyment and short attention spans. When at a show that’s mellow, be mellow and shut up. I, like a lot of others, was there to hear The Books, not a bunch of douchebags conversing and toolbags “shhhhh-ing” each other superfluously.
