Cardinals’ track and field off to fast start

The men’s and women’s track and field team kicked off its first of four home meets this weekend with some excellent early season performances. While most of the distance squad was resting on Saturday after their dominant cross-country season, the sprinters had been training all fall and were ready to race.

Freshman Brad Litchfield won his first collegiate race, dropping a 1:09 in the 500 meters. Litchfield later teamed with Seth Warren ’05, co- captain Taylor Bentley ’06, and Andres Rosario ’08 to lead the 4×400 meter relay team to victory. While in the long jump freshman Tyler Byrne placed third, with a mark of 19 and a half feet.

Co-captain Wes Fuhrman was the lone distance representative and dominated both the mile and 800 meters, winning with times of 4:25 and 2:01 in each event.

“I’m getting an early start on the indoor season this year because my eligibility runs out before the outdoor season,” said Fuhrman. “It was good to get out and run a decent double, but this season is all about dropping hot times at big meets later on. It was also good to see the sprinters out there running well this early in the season.”

On the women’s side, Kristy Williams ’06 won the weight throw and placed second in the shot put led the team. Stephanie O’Brien ’08 and Cara Chebuske ’06 also added victories in the 800 meters and 600 meters respectively. Sprint standout Tameir Holder ’08 also finished fifth in the 55m dash against tough competition.

The distance squad will join the team come January, at their second home meet of the season on the 14th. All-American cross-country standout Owen Kiely will lead the squad in both the 5k and the mile, while the team also hopes to make great strides in the Distance Medley Relay, which will return sophomores Chris Greene and Nik Gavelis from the team that earned All-NESCAC honors last spring.
