In response to Dylan Osborn’s Friday, April 9, Wespeak:
While I share your sympathies regarding both SUVs and the performance of current hybrid cars, think about what you’re saying.
The Carrera GT that you want displaces 5.7 liters and gets an EPA combined mileage of 12 MPG. The EPA hasn’t tested your other two dream cars yet, but the current Ferrari V12 manual pulls the exact same numbers. I doubt the Audi is much better.
Obviously, these cars are produced in extremely limited runs and contribute only a small fraction of the emissions given off by the combined American SUV fleet. On the other hand, you are asking the masses to keep their consumption down so that in the future a few rich people will be able to enjoy equally wasteful if somewhat more exclusive vehicles.
The future of automotive power is going to be interesting, and in 20 years I predict that there will be alternative fuel options that will make internal combustion look both inefficient and weak. I’m sure you can figure out a way to make these new cars as loud as their predecessors.
Keeping all this in mind, ask yourself if you are comfortable with the hypocrisy of your request. That said, I’ll take the Ferrari and the Porsche, please. And maybe the Audi too, while you’re at it.
