The Cardinal softball team hosted the Williams College Ephs in a three-game series this past weekend, shutting out the Ephs in the first game of a double header on Saturday 8-0, with a three-hit pitching performance from tri-captain Dana Levy ’12. But the Ephs, having won the single game the previous day, won the series after stealing the second game of the doubleheader. The series loss puts Wes in 4th place in the NESCAC West Conference, with a record of 3-6, just behind Williams.
In Friday’s game, Wes jumped on board first, after a series of strategic plays from Allee Beatty ’13. She was placed on first after a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored after a sacrifice fly by Chrissy Bello ’12. Williams answered quickly, scoring in the 2nd inning and gaining three more runs in the 3rd. Wes could not close the gap, and Williams sealed the deal with five runs in the 7th inning to take the 11-4 win. Laura Getchell ’14 shined in the loss, posting a seven-strikeout game.
The next day Wesleyan, determined for revenge, raced out to a 5-0 lead in the 1st inning. Beatty led off with a double down the right side, followed by a homer by Levy to right field, her team-leading fourth of the season. Sam Epstein ’12, Tori Redding ’13, and Beatty contributed RBI singles to give Wes a 5-0 cushion after the 1st. In the 2nd inning, Matti Peters ’13, Alexis Kral ’12, and Redding added hits to give Wes three more runs in the frame. Williams had no chance to answer, with Levy pitching a remarkable three-hitter; meanwhile, the Williams pitcher allowed 13 hits. Wesleyan held on to its offensive momentum going into the second game in Saturday’s double-header. After falling behind 5-0 in the first two innings, Wes came back in the 3rd to make it a close 5-4 contest with a two-run single from Kral. Williams responded in the 4th, extending their lead to 9-4 before grabbing the 14-5 win. The Ephs out-hit the Cardinals 16-11 in the contest.
Next up for the Cards is a non-conference game this Thursday against neighboring rival Western Connecticut State, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday against the Trinity College Bantams. Trinity is currently 7-2 in the NESCAC East division.
