Softball Goes 1-2 Against Middlebury

This past weekend the Cardinal softball team ceded a doubleheader on Saturday, April 2 to the Middlebury Bobcats, losing a close 1-2 battle the first game before falling 0-8 in five innings the following game. The Cards came back out on Sunday to give Middlebury a taste of their own medicine, turning the tables to trounce the Bobcats 8-0 in five innings, snagging the single game victory.

The first game on Saturday was slow moving, with Middlebury grabbing a single run in the first inning and then again in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Amy Lindland ‘14 bunted the pitch and got on base. She advanced to second on the next out before stealing third, putting herself in a position to score off of a single from Chrissy Bello ‘12. This run put Wes up on the scoreboard, but due to strong defense on both sides, neither team was able to score throughout the remainder of the game, giving Middlebury the final 2-1 victory. The next game Middlebury jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and Wes could not gain enough steam to correct the deficit, falling 8-0 in just five innings.

It was a tale of two teams the following day in Middletown, as a refreshed Cardinal squad came out to deliver an 8-0 defeat over Middlebury. The Cardinals took a 3-0 lead in the first after a bunt from Allee Beaty ‘13 and a walk to Dana Levy ‘12, which put the Cards in position to score off of a home run launched to left field by Bello. This marked Bello’s second home run of the year. Levy followed suit the second inning, smashing a home run to give Wes a 4-0 lead. Wes steadily built its score again in the third with a one-out double from Matti Peters ‘13, allowing Talia Bernstein ‘11 to get a run and score. A single from Tori Redding ‘13 scored Peters on the next play advancing Wes to a 6-0 cushion. The fourth inning remained scoreless before the Cardinals sealed the deal in the fifth with two more runs off of hits from Alexis Kral ‘12, Sam Epstein ‘12, and Redding. Laura Getchell ‘14 produced a strong pitching performance, only allowing two hits, one walk, and posting four strikeouts. This victory demonstrated the Lady Card’s ability to win big as the result of a well-balanced offense and defense.

The Cardinals’ record stands at 7-11 overall and 1-2 in NESCAC West conference. The squad looks to take down the Lord Jeffs of Amherst College this weekend with a single game at home on Friday, followed by a double header on the road on Saturday. Amherst currently leads the NESCAC West conference 2-0 with a pair of wins over Hamilton College last weekend.
