The Wesleyan women’s tennis team is off to a promising start since having started their spring play this month, going 2-2 in their last four matches.
The women took a trip down to Orlando, Fla., where they played their first match against Upper Iowa University on March 6. They defeated the out of conference opponent 6-3 before squaring off against the University of Rochester the next day. Despite sound play, the Yellow Jackets stung the Cardinals, 7-2. In their third contest, Wesleyan faced off against the Drew University Rangers, who stood no chance against the much deeper and more talented Cardinals. Despite playing without their number one, Genevieve Aniello ’13, the women would cruise to an easy 9-0 victory, with each player winning in straight sets.
On Wednesday, March 9, the Cardinals would unfortunately fall to St. Cloud in a tightly contested 5-4 match to fall back to a .500 record. The individual matches against St. Cloud saw some interesting results. Sarah Miller ’12 and Nicki Softness ’14 won both their matches in straight sets at number two and number four respectively, while #3 Grace Smith ’14 won in a grueling three set contest. Linda McDougal ’11 and Kaitlyn Clark ’14 would also lose tightly contested matches at number five and number six respectively. Despite winning overall in the singles matches, the Wesleyan team would lose two of the three doubles matches, thus losing by just one match.
Softness tore up the court throughout the trip, going undefeated in both her single and doubles matches while Kiley Robbins ’14 only had one loss. Next Wednesday, March 30, the lady Cardinals will square off against NESCAC and Little Three rival Amherst. The Cardinals will be looking for the upset against Amherst, who has yet to play any matches within the NESCAC this season, but leads the conference with an overall record of 4-1.
