Over spring break, the Cardinal softball team traveled to Clermont, Fla., to compete in a string of 13 games against a variety of competitors. The team, with nine returning letter winners, started the trip off strong with two initial back-to-back wins over Muhlenberg College and Medaille College. The Lady Cards continued their winning streak the following day with a close 10-9 victory over Simmons College. Despite a solid 3-0 start to the spring training trip, the Cardinals began to falter as they ceded their next four games in Florida.
After four tough losses, the Cards managed to briefly right the ship with a win over Westfield State, creating an even 4-4 record. However, the squad was unable to continue the winning fervor, as they fell the same day to Bethel University 9-11. Frustrated and ready for a victory, the team came away with an impressive 10-1 slaughter of Bethany College, ending the game in just six innings.
Dana Levy ’12 proved to be the Cardinals’ offensive spark, as she tallied nine hits including a three-run homer in the first inning and a two-run double in the sixth. Preceding Levy’s double, Talia Bernstein ’11 smacked a two-run single in the fifth inning. Bernstein hit a remarkable .550 over the team’s final six games in Florida, racking up seven runs and six RBIs to be named NESCAC Player of the Week March 21.
The Lady Cards worked off of their big win over Bethany College to snag another great 6-1 victory over New England College. Chrissy Bello ’12 got the Cardinals on board early in the first with a double, followed by an RBI single from Bernstein. Tori Redding ’13 also came through with a big two-run triple in the sixth right before Bello added another RBI to give Wesleyan a solid five run lead.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals ended their spring training trip with a pair of losses; first to Western New England College in a tight 6-7 battle and then to Transylvania University, falling 7-15. Upon return from Florida, the team now holds a 6-7 overall record, still 0-0 in NESCAC West conference play. The Cards will be looking to get back on a winning track as they host Eastern Connecticut College State University in a home opener at Long Lane Field on Wednesday, March 30.
