This weekend, both the men’s and women’s track teams traveled to the New England Division III meet, which featured the best runners and field competitors from northeastern Division III schools. The Wes men really showed their stuff, as they placed eighth of 25 scoring teams. MIT won the event with 114 points, followed by Williams with 112.
The men’s team traveled to Springfield this Saturday, Feb. 19, to take on the best that New England had to offer. Quad-captain Tommie Lark ’12 had an outstanding day, automatically qualifying for the NCAA meet in the triple jump (48-2 ½). With his jump, he placed second at the meet and cleared his previous school record of 47-1 ¾ set in 2009. Lark will be traveling to the NCAA Division III Championships this March in Columbus, Ohio, where he will take on the best jumpers in the country. Lark also placed third in the long jump with a 22-7 performance, accounting for 14 of Wesleyan’s 37 team points, but he was not the only Cardinal tearing up the track.
In total, Wesleyan had seven top-eight finishes that picked up points. Skyler Cummins ’13 came in second in the 3000k (8:34.90), while Bryan Marsh’ 13 was right behind in fourth place (8:38.91). Ernest Wingate ’14 had a fifth-place finish in the 55m hurdles (0:07.93). The distance medley relay squad of Austin Cotant ‘13, Seth Hafferkamp ’12, Sam Roth ’13, and quad-captain Matt Katz ’11 won their heat and grabbed fifth place overall (10.36.96).
“I was very happy with our team’s performance; we showed the NESCAC that we are ready to take them down in outdoor [competition] this spring,” Katz said.
The Lady Cardinals traveled to MIT for their New England Division III championships this weekend. The ladies picked up three team points to tie for 20th among 23 scoring teams. Williams won the competition with 141 points, and host MIT was right behind them in second place with 137. Co-captain Kathryn Kulowski ’11 was the only Cardinal to pick up points as she cleared 5-0 ¼ in the high jump to capture eighth place.
Accounting for Wesleyan’s remaining two team points was the distance medley relay squad of co-captain Jess Levin ’11, Ceili Brennan ’13, Nicole Lepre ’13, and Julia Mark ’13 as they placed seventh with a time of 12:48.56.
“With indoor championship season coming to a close,” Kulowski noted, “I’m excited for the prospect of a great outdoor season. The team has a lot of potential and with NESCACs being home this year, hopefully it will inspire the team to work hard so we can put up a good showing on our home track!”
“[The championships were] a good meet to gage how our team stands up against the other NESCACs,” Levin said. “There were a few promising performances, but after yesterday we know we need to step up our game. As the season progresses I know we will.”
Up next, the Cardinals will be competing in the New England Open Championships, hosted by Boston University this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25 and 26.
