The Wesleyan women’s hockey team closed out its season this past weekend on the road at Connecticut College and Hamilton College. They fell to fifth-seeded Conn. College on Friday 5-2, but the game was much closer than the score indicated, as the Cards gave the opponent a scare, clinging onto a 3-2 lead for most of the game. On Saturday, they fell to sixth seed Hamilton 4-0.
At Friday’s game, Wesleyan jumped on the board first, with a goal from Jill Reynolds ’12 on an assist by Rebecca Snelling ’12. The goal was Reynolds’ team-leading sixth goal of the season. Three minutes later, Conn. converted on a power play to tie the score, and notched a second goal to end the first with a 2-1 lead. Conn. extended this lead to 3-1 with a goal at 7:06 in the second. Wesleyan didn’t crack; they answered with a goal from Sena Ito ’11 assisted by Reynolds, closing the score to a close 3-2 margin. The score remained unchanged for more than 13 minutes before the Camels broke through the defense, finding the net behind keeper Ashleigh Corvi ’13. At the end of the third, the Camels scored again, ending the game with a 5-2 victory. Corvi finished the game with an outstanding 42 saves, a performance unmatched by the Conn. goalies, who combined for a mere total of 15 saves.
On Saturday, the Cardinals didn’t quite have the same offensive fervor as the previous night. Traveling a distance to face the Hamilton Continentals, the home team maintained a wide 59-14 shot advantage over the Cardinals in the contest. In the final period alone, the Continentals outshot the Cards 29-4. Hamilton had a pair of goals in the first and a pair in the third, shutting out the Cardinals to grab the 4-0 win.
The Cardinals close the 2010-2011 season with a record of 2-20-1. Reynolds finishes out the season with a team-leading 11 points, followed by Kelsey Muller ’13 with five points. Four players are tied with four points, including Ito, who ends her 92-game career with 31 points. The team is losing five seniors, but will look to work hard in the off-season with the returning 16 players to prepare for the 2011-2012 season.
