The Cardinal women’s ice hockey team started the new year off right, defeating Plymouth State University 5-1 on January 4, with goals coming from Glenn Harman-Mattson ’14, Jill Reynolds ’12, Leah Coe ’11, Julia Heffelfinger ’11 and Ann Wheeler ’12. Following the win, though, the Cardinals fell in NESCAC contests to Middlebury and Williams. Despite the tough losses, the team righted the ship on Jan. 13 with a 1-1 OT tie against New England College, a team the Cards lost to 3-1 last season.
With that performance giving them confidence, the Cardinals left Middletown for a road trip to Maine to play NESCAC rivals Bowdoin and Colby. In Friday’s match at Bowdoin, the Cardinals lost by five goals to the Bears. Bowdoin scored a goal in the first period, added two in the second, and notched three more in the third, ending the game with a total of six goals. Wesleyan’s goal came in the third period from senior Molly Friedemann ’11, assisted by Julia Mulhern ’12 and Jenna Vanderlinden ’14. The Bears capitalized on three power plays in the third period and amassed their goals with a 54-12 shot differential throughout the contest. Sophomore goalie Ashleigh Corvi ’13 ended the game with 48 saves, 38 of which came in the first two periods.
The next day the Cardinals faced a tough match again, as the Colby Mules managed to pull out a 2-1 victory. Reynolds put Wes on the board with 1:06 left in the first period, assisted by Jaime Bonner ’12 and Wheeler. It was Reynolds’ team-leading fifth goal of the season. Corvi again made 38 saves in the first two periods, and Wes headed into the third with a 1-0 lead. The Mules didn’t give up, breaking the Wes defense two and a half minutes into the third and scoring the game winner four minutes later to avenge last year’s 3-2 loss to Wes. The Cardinals could not even the score before time expired.
Wesleyan will be at home for its next NESCAC weekend, hosting Middlebury Friday, Jan. 28, then Williams Saturday, Jan. 29. The team stands at a 2-11-1 record, 0-8 in the NESCAC.
