Men and Women’s Swimming Concludes First Semester

The men and women’s swim teams dove into their season Nov. 20 with a pair of wins against NESCAC rivals Trinity and Bates. The teams both suffered tough losses to Little Three rival Amherst College the following Monday. The men fell to the Lord Jeffs 79-122, and the women lost 98-136. This past weekend the Cardinals were back at it again in their annual Cardinal Invitational Tournament. The women were able to recover from their tough loss to Amherst, placing first in their tournament, handing losses to Hamilton, Trinity, WPI, and Clark. The men were less successful, coming in fourth behind WPI, Hamilton, and Trinity but ahead of Clark.

The women finished with 1282.5 points in the 24-event meet. Rachel Cohen ’12 scored leading titles in the 1650 free with a time of 18:16.81 and the 200 fly with a time of 2:14.14. She was the only Cardinal to amass two first-place times for the team. Taylor Hotvet ’14 accumulated points for the Cards with a first-place-time winning effort in the 500m free and third-place effort in the 1650m free. The relay squad of Cara Colker-Eybel ’13, Ally Anderson ’13, Alyssa Savarino ’14, and Cara Madden ’11 swept the free relays for the Cards. Colker-Eybel also had a victory in the 100m individual medley. A strong performance from freshman Tess Lemon ’14 gave the Cardinals a victory in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:33.08.

The Cardinal men were less successful but still put up a strong fight. The squad’s best efforts came from Momo Saleh ’12, as he placed third in three events; the 400m individual medley, the 100m breast, and the 1650m free. Team captain Darren Thomason ’11 added another third-place effort for the team in the 50m breaststroke. The 703 points put the Cardinals in fourth place, behind third-place Trinity at a score of 826.5.

Both teams have now concluded their first semester of racing and they will head to Florida in January for winter training. Competition resumes Jan. 15 with back-to-back away meets against Williams and Tufts.
