Cards beat Jumbos

Playing at home on Sunday, the Cardinals defeated Tufts by a score of 1-0 to advance to the semifinal round of the NESCAC championship.

After last Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over the Jumbos, Wesleyan blanked its conference rival for the second time in just four days. In the process goalkeeper Caitlin Kelly ’07 recorded her fourth shutout of the 2005 campaign.

The game’s lone goal came from Hailey Sarage ’09. With just over fourteen minutes remaining in the first half, Sarage scored on a free hit from Maddie Rottman ’07 to put the Cardinals ahead. The goal was the first of Sarage’s Wesleyan career.

Thanks to a stellar effort from the Wesleyan defense, that small cushion would suffice to secure the victory. The Cardinal backfield held Tufts to a mere five shots on goal, and just one during the first stanza.

Next up for the Cardinals is Saturday’s NESCAC semifinal against an undefeated and top-seeded Bowdoin College squad. The Polar Bears, ranked fourth in the nation, defeated the Cardinals by a score of 7-1 when the two teams faced off on Saturday. Scoring for Wesleyan was Adrienne Shea ’08 who connected off of an assist from Sarah Rosenfeld ’07. In that contest Kelly managed 16 saves.
