The Wesleyan women’s soccer team suffered a tough 2-0 loss this Saturday against Little Three archrival, Amherst College. With this win, Amherst maintained its second-place position in the NESCAC standings. The loss was especially hard since last season Amherst knocked the Wes women out of the playoffs with a close overtime defeat.
With the homecoming sprit behind them, the Cardinals charged onto the field with a vengeance, ready to take on the Amherst Lady Jeffs. However, Amherst player Amanda Brisco ’14 scored just under eight minutes into the game on their first corner kick of the day. Wes goalie Grace Bomann ’14 was there for the initial stop, but unfortunately Brisco pounded in the rebound. Eight minutes later, Brisco scored again during a one-on-one with Bomann. This would be the end of the scoring for the rest of the match.
Forward Laura Kurash ’13 tried to get the Cards on the scoreboard with a powerful free kick shot with just seventeen minutes to play before half. Kurash launched the ball past the Amherst defense, but unfortunately Amherst goalie Allie Horwitz made an impressive save as she swiftly snatched up the ball.
During the second half, both teams maintained a strong defensive wall, while also generating more offensive activity. The Lady Jeffs were determined to push the lead to three goals, but Wes goalie Clare Colton ’12, who replaced Bomann in the second half, held strong and prevented any further scoring. Nearing the end of the game, Wesleyan sent a third forward up the field, looking to increase shots on net. Unfortunately, the Cards’ final attempt to score was unsuccessful, and the game ended in a 2-0 loss. Despite this defeat, the Cardinal squad is still guaranteed a spot in the playoffs.
