On homecoming weekend the Field Hockey team lost a heartbreaking contest to NESCAC and Little Three rival Amherst College. Losing a closely contested game by a score of 4-3, the Cardinals fell to sixth place in the NESCAC with a conference record of 4-4 and an overall record of 9-4.
The Lord Jeffs scored the first two goals of the game, taking a 2-0 lead with 7:34 remaining in the first half. Determined to get a goal before half, Liz Chabot ’12 ran the ball down field to score an unassisted goal, putting Wes on board.
The team built on Chabot’s first goal, coming out to score the next two goals in the second half. Nine minutes in, Chabot faked out her defender, firing the ball hard towards the cage, allowing Morgan McCauley ’12 to direct it in for Wes’ second goal. Two minutes later Wes took the lead at 46:17 off of another goal from Chabot, assisted by tri-captain Allie Lynch ’11, giving Lynch fifth assist of the season, tying with McCauley to lead the team.
Amherst remained flustered for a majority of the half but broke through their offensive slump with a tying goal with 7:13 remaining in the game. After tying the game, the Lord Jeffs tallied the game-winner with just 1:45 left in regulation time. Wes hurried for offensive opportunities but time ran out, giving the Little Three victory to Amherst.
“We had a real shot to capture the Little Three title this season,” said McCauley. “It was a disappointing loss, but hopefully we will be able to face Amherst again in the playoffs.”
The Cardinals will look to rally back from the loss this week, taking on the Connecticut College Camels at home this Friday. The team won a close 3-2 victory last season and hope to come out on top again, aiming for the fifth seed going into the NESCAC playoffs.
