The Cardinal Field Hockey team shut out Wellesley College 3-0 this past Wednesday advancing its record to 5-0; the best start to its season since the 1978 squad opened with a 5-0 record.
Liz Chabot ’12 netted the first goal of the game left of the goaltender 16 minutes into play, acquiring her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Joining Chabot with a goal in the first half was freshman Amber Bruckner ’14. After an offensive scramble in front of the net, Morgan McCauley ’12 finally found Bruckner’s stick in the mix to assist Bruckner in her first career goal and give McCauley her second assist of the season. Up 2-0 at half, the Cards still came out firing with 12 shot attempts in the second half alone. Wes’ third goal came off of an aggressive challenge by Averill Roberto ’13. Roberto beat her defender with a quick spin move, firing the ball past the goalie to give Wes a comfortable and final 3-0 lead. The game marked the second shutout of the season for goaltender Tori Redding ’13—and the fifth in her career.
Chabot, who was named to womensfieldhockey.com weekly honor roll for her exceptional performance last week, said that the team is very excited about their winning streak.
“We’re all thrilled with our record and we’re working really hard to continue it,” she said. “But we’re not going to let it get to our heads—we’re taking each game one at a time.”
The Cards will have their next opportunity this Saturday on the road against Tufts University. Wesleyan last beat the Jumbos in 2005 1-0. Tufts is top-five nationally ranked and will be Wes’s fiercest competition yet. But the Cardinals, ranked #20 on womensfieldhockey.com weekly poll, are focused and ready to take down the Jumbos and advance their NESCAC record to 3-0.
